I basically knew about nearly all of this, but with that in mind, I still assumed it turned out valuable. Beautiful blog!

Cheryl, I can see how this struck a chord with you! I agree the real birds are amazing - particularly the eagle owl. I saw one at a country show a few years ago. Looking into its eyes, I could see how we attribute owls with wisdom.

Thank you sharing my work with your colleagues. If they have any particular questions on how to be inspired, just let me know.

Thanks Susan for sharing your story. It seems to have started when you recognised the turning point. As you say, up to then you had been comfortable. But something brought the turning point to your attention - I wonder what that was. As a result you made a new choice and I'm glad it has been so liberating for you.

You're right Jon how a well-established habit can start to give us an identity. As Aristotle put it 'We are what we repeatedly do'. Fortunately we can choose our habits. Some of course work well for us and others less so. The hedgehogs are a symbol for what worked well once but no longer does. When this dawns - and awareness is the key - we can make a new choice.

I was caught up with almost the same thing but Owls' were my collection. For years everyone bought me Owl pictures, statues, jewelry, you name it. I did stop it relatively early though because it wasn't the pictures, statues or the jewelry I loved or was intrigued , it was real honest to goodness live birds. They still interest me but I have widened my interest to include many type of birds and so many other animals. I don't ever want to be so focused on one particular thing again. I really enjoy your articles and I forward those on to my staff when I think they are appropriate, always giving you the credit! Very enjoyable and uplifting! We are in Healthcare and need your inspiration! Thank you and keep them coming.

What a great story Trevor, and a great metaphor for where many of us can find ourselves at different points in our life. I have to say, your story made me think about myself, but in a slightly different way.

I felt, fairly recently, that I have "broken away" from an identity that I have been carrying around for quite a long time (nothing to do with hedgehogs or any other animal for that matter!). It was an identity that I had grown up with and developed over years (and was quite comfortable with) but which I began to realise was an identity that had been defined by others rather than by myself and hence, was not my true identity.

Rather like "the hedgehog lady", I reached a turning point where I felt that I wanted to explore my new (and truer) identity and to stop being defined in the way that may people (including myself) had seen me. And that has been liberating!

So, your blog has given me food for thought Trevor, thanks! It's amazing how a story about something so innocuous (like collecting hedgehogs!) can open up our minds to all sorts of personal exploration!

Lovely story Trevor it is funny how one innocent purchase can become a hobby and focus for everyone else to join in and feel thye are helping you in some way. I personally would find it difficult to open a birthday or Christmas present pretty certain it was going to be a hedgehog in some format. I guess for many it was a releief as the pressure of getting the 'right' present for soemone and spending houras pondering what to get is relieved suddenly with the arrival of a ready made solution like this. It can start to give us an identity, the hedgehog lady and perhaps looking a little deeper into the significance of hedgehog they are prickly on the outside yet very soft and tender inside and their prickles are their defence, they curl up into a ball and hope the predator will give up and go away. Fortunately throughout my life I have not been afflicted by this in any big way and have managed to keep my passions for things small so they almost go unnoticed and I can still open my presents not knowing what i am going to find.

Thank you Jon for all your observations - and particularly the challenge: "There is no fear in the now, go on try it, try and get frightened in the now". This is a reality check for us all!

Good posting Trevor, I am just back from my travels and wanted to feed into the process as a short piece like this gives your mind something positive to think about and dwell on and come up with some answers. For me I have this saying which is "where attention and thought goes energy flows and where energy flows things get bigger." So if we are always focussing on what we don't want to happen, hey presto we get more of what we don't want. Knowing this may help some to focus on what they do want. There are no wrong answers here just your answers and if it like a coin comes up unwanted side up flip it over and see what is the opposite for you. Equally our feet can only be in the here and now whilst our head goes flying off into the past or future. You see there is no fear in the now, go on try it, try and get frightened in the now, it can't be done but if we allow our head to take us back to past events and then normally project them onto an unknown future we sure can get frightened. So bringing ourselves back into the here and now, the present, really helps quell those fears.

Keep up the excellent work
